Amazon Rumored to Launch Smartphone

Amazon.com is rumored to be planning a launch of a proprietary smartphone to compete with Apple’s ever-popular iPhone. Amazon plans to use Foxconn — the Taiwanese mobile phone plant which produces the iPhone — to manufacture its cell phone.

This comes on the heels of the success of the Kindle Fire — Amazon’s tablet which competes with the iPad directly and virtually functions the same way.

This would help Jeff Bezos, CEO, give his company market share in the lucrative cell phone industry.  Amazon is also supposedly acquiring mobile technology patents to assist in this endeavor.

Microsoft Buys Yammer for $1.2 Billion

By

In an attempt to become more social, Microsoft purchased Yammer — an online, enterprise site — this week for $1.2 Billion. Yammer will be a separate entity from Microsoft, but operate in conjunction with SharePoint, Office 365, Dynamics and Skype.

But what is Yammer exactly? And why was Microsoft willing to pay over a billion dollars for it?  According to its website, “Yammer brings the power of social networking to the enterprise in a private and secure environment. Yammer… is designed for company collaboration, file sharing, knowledge exchange and team efficiency.”

So basically, it’s an expensive version of Dropbox with a status update option?

As time passes, we will have a better idea of how this software works and whether it was worth money.

Why Don’t I Rank in Google

internet marketingBy

I’m often asked by clients and potential clients, “Why don’t I rank in Google?”.  It’s a difficult question to answer, because there are so many contributing factors.  Also, if a keyword is especially competitive, it can be challenging to beat out other websites for the top spot in Google search results.

Here are some things one can do to rank in Google:

1) Optimize your site for important keywords

2) Create specific content pages for keyword you’d like to rank for

3) Post blogs on keyword/topic ranking is desired for

4) Build links for the keywords

In essence, Google will be checking the internet (other websites) and your site for relevant keywords and content which in turn controls your rankings.

Ever since Google released its latest algorithm update, the web has been buzzing with info about over optimization. But what exactly does that mean?

Simply put the days of keyword-stuffing and link farming are officially over. If you have a bunch of sites in your repertoire don’t use them to link to each other for rankings. Also, keep your URL’s short and your meta tags an appropriate length. Google might penalize you with lower rankings or worse yet de-index our site.

There are a number of free, link directories that can help your site rank.  Take a minute and do a search.

How to Take Advantage of YouTube

YouTube

By

If you’re like millions of others, you probably watch videos on YouTube — and potentially have even uploaded a video of your own on Google’s video sharing website.

YouTube is great for watching movie trailers, music videos, or even a cat dancing. But how does that help your business for SEO and ultimately conversions?  The answer is consumers more than ever want a personal connection with businesses.  If you are a personal trainer, potential clients might enjoy watching a video of you doing workout routines or even explaining a healthy diet plan.

Once videos are uploaded to YouTube, people just sort of stumble upon them, right?  Not exactly.  Something which is inherently popular, Coldplay’s new album, for example, will have a natural following.  But for the average business, posting videos and getting views requires some finesse.

Here are four easy steps to increase your chances of getting views on YouTube:

1) Use the name of your business, location, and subject matter in the title.

2) Add keywords for your video which are similar to the title but expand a bit

3) Add a link to your website.  Must be full http://www.domain.com format to become a hyperlink.

4) Use strong keywords and provide good information in the videos description

These items listed above will definitely help your videos receive views on YouTube.

Top 5 Things Your Website Needs for SEO

By

Here’s a list of the top 5 things your site needs to rank well in Google and have great SEO:

SEO Tips

1) Inbound links or backlinks: I can’t emphasize enough how your site has very little chance of ranking without links.  It’s like a popularity contest: the more links you have the more Google likes you.

2) Blog: We all know what a blog is, but why does it matter for SEO?  The reason is strong blog posts, on important or interesting topics, drives traffic to your site.

3) Strong Content: Articles about your industry have a similar effect to blogs. Also important, are good pages on the services or products you offer.

4) Meta Tags: There’s still some debate on this, but at a minimum, each page of your site should have a unique, relevant Title and Description.

5) Directory Listings: There are so many FREE sites which your business can be listed on. Look to sites like Yelp, Yahoo, Google, and LinkedIn. These help potential consumers locate your business.

I can guarantee that if you implement these changes, and really do it well, that you will see amazing results. SEO is not easy, but these tips can make the challenge a bit easier.

Google Adwords: Worth the Money?

Google Adwords

By

Is it worth signing up for Google Adwords also known as pay-per-click (PPC)? The short answer is yes. There’s no faster way to get good traffic to your site that can lead to conversions. As long as the campaign you setup is well-targeted, the keywords are strong, and you use multiple ads that lead to strong landing pages, PPC is great.

So what’s the downside? Adwords can be quite costly and doesn’t always create that many customers for you. Moreover, if your site is well-optimized and there are strong inbound links to your site, ideally you don’t need it.

I recommend a trial period. Test out PPC for a few months and see how it works for you.

Bye, Bye Yahoo! Site Explorer

Yahoo Site Explorer

By

Yahoo! Site Explorer has officially merged with Bing Webmaster Tools. This means the day of checking your site’s backlinks or inbound links with Yahoo! are over in essence.  You can opt to install tracking code on your site and use Bing, but I personally found it cumbersome.

It took me a while to understand how Bing’s version works.  But now It seems that Site Explorer was much more user friendly and perhaps more accurate.

Fortunately, there are some other sites that do check backlinks such as Backlink Watch which I find highly effective.  Also, using Google Webmaster Tools you can track inbound links and other data for your site.
